In dating and attraction, there is the concept of “one-itis.” If you’re actively single, you don’t ever want to date just one person and one person only, since putting too much weight and significance to that one human will mess up your entire mental frame. If you do focus on just 1 person too much, you’re much more likely to psych yourself out, do something needy, over analyze, and in general just mess up the whole thing.
I think the same applies to job searching. You have to come from a place of abundance, not scarcity. You never want to apply to “1 job at a time” and then wait patiently for that one employer to make their move. You’ll likely be checking your email every 10 minutes for any word, all while subconsciously idealizing the company, making them seem even more appealing (since they’re giving you no attention).
Simply put: scarcity makes you desperate-a very unattractive attitude in general.
So instead, you need to come from a “place of plenty.” Why do you think they tell you to apply to so many jobs when looking for a new one? So when a company doesn’t get back to you, you say “whatever” and look forward to the dozens of other companies who will chat with you.
On that note, I’ve expanded my reach to not only jobs in Seattle, but San Francisco as well. I applied to Flexport, a pioneering logistics company that is using software to change the entire logistics game. A friend, Alex Stark, works there and will put in a good word. That aside, I had a successful phone interview with a business consulting company, Bluewolf (also in San Francisco).
In other news, an acquaintance reached out to me about interviewing for an account management role at ZT Systems, a cloud services company here in Seattle. This Thursday we’ll go for a happy hour as an informal interview.
That said, I’m trying to come from a place of abundance and opportunity; in numbers and location.
